During my working life, the computer has gone from a very expensive machine housed in a very expensive room, used by very skilled engineers and scientists to a home entertainment device that most every person under 60 feels like they have mastery over.
There was great expectation during the 1980s and 1990s that personal computers would greatly increase work productivity. For the most part, I don't think it has. And for the most part, the ordinary person is clueless as to how to make use of his desktop fun box.
The reason why is simple. Most people use a computer like they would have used a typewriter. They write memos with nifty bold lettering, colored borders, etc. They create spreadsheet files that make no use of rows or columns for data manipulation. They use the boxes like so many post it notes, creating super-doodle pads as a result.
